Volunteers who give their time to help others have been praised by two Plaid Cymru councillors for Hengoed.

Donna Cushing and Teresa Parry, who are standing for Plaid Cymru in elections to Caerphilly County Borough Council and Gelligaer Community Council next month, are always ready to chip in whenever they can – even it means doing the washing up!

Donna explained:  “Both Teresa and I are passionate about helping volunteer groups in our area. I assisted the Croeso Club obtain funding from The Big Lottery’s Awards for All scheme by filling in an application form for them.

“We have both been volunteers in our own areas for a number of years and appreciate the difficulties they face in getting funding and individuals to help out.

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of community spirit in the area and if it wasn’t for them there would be a lot of people feeling lonely and probably requiring additional support from social services,” explained Donna.

Teresa added:  “I’m always willing to get stuck in and was pleased to help the hard-working Cefn Hengoed OAP Association prepare meals for their group.

“We are very grateful to all the volunteers who run these groups. They give their time and sometimes their own funds to keep these groups running. We are happy to support and get involved – even if it means washing up!”
